The backdoors have been caused by several things, but more than often a rogue piece of code used in the server's numerous plugins. The admin team/Hausemaster has patched these items out of the server and plugin installation is now more strict.

Clients and hacks vary from utility mods and clients, all the way to Baritone which uses Ai learning to do actions for the player. 2b2t has had a culture around custom clients and has even influenced the creation of new clients and mods. Majority of 2b2t players use "hacks" and clients because the server has no rules against doing so.

2b2t shops
Players on 2b2t have been trading items for real world money for years; though, some players have set up professional businesses that are made to sell in game items to new players. These shops usually sell shulker boxes with in game items labeled as specific kits. These shops have Discord servers, websites, etc. that they use to accomplish this. Presently, 2b2t shops often use bots or players to deliver kits to certain areas.

A deal implemented by the server team that allows for players to purchase a faster way into the server for 20$. Priority queue is marked as a "donation" and it is the server's primary source of income. The priority queue varies from 0 to 160 players in length, depending on time and events.
